The origin of the term &quot;starboard&quot; is slightly more arcane. It dates back to when boats where steered using a special oar at the rudder. Since more oarsmen were right-handed than left-handed, it made sense to put it on the right. Hence &quot;steerboard&quot; =&gt; &quot;starboard&quot;.</description>
