Port is left, because that's where the kerb is. The origin of the term "starboard" is slightly more arcane. It dates back to when boats where steered using a special oar at the rudder. Since more oarsmen were right-handed than left-handed, it made sense to put it on the right. Hence "steerboard" => "starboard".
