Lots of the other girls had tutus and proper pink shoes with ribbons, but I think the impression I had was that you had to reach a certain stage before you could have those. It was probably the case that mum suspected I wasn't going to see this one through, so wasn't going to invest in any such nonsense prematurely. She was quite right.
