Why Organic? There are several important reasons why people have turned to organic food in recent years, although it is not a new idea: nearly all farming practices were “organic” before the World Wars. Recently, concerns about the use of pesticides and growth hormones, animal welfare, wildlife conservation, genetically modified (GM) organisms and the wide-scale use of antibiotics in animal feed have led many consumers to demand a safer and more sustainable way of producing their food. An estimated 4.5 billion litres of more than 350 different types of pesticide are used in conventional farming each year. There are strict laws regarding the residues from these pesticides, but there have been no long-term studies into their effects: not singly and also, more worryingly, not the “pesticide cocktail” that we consume. GM technology is simply banned from organic methods and GM ingredients are not used in any organic production.
